This would drastically reduce backlogs in a variety of immigration programmes, notably Express Entry, that has had large backlogs since the COVID-19 outbreak began. Applicants for work permits and study permits can rejoice at Minister Fraser’s pledge to return these temporary residency applications to IRCC effectively implementing by the end of 2022, if not sooner. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will use $85 million in new cash granted to the ministry in the Economic and Fiscal Update 2021 to shorten Canadian immigration processing timelines in 2022. Timeframes for Express Entry in 2022
Minister Fraser stated during a press conference on January 31 that Canada is working to reduce the backlog of permanent residency applications. Processing timelines for family sponsorship in 2022
As of January 2022, spousal sponsorship applications are fulfilling the IRCC’s processing standard of 80 percent of applications being processe within 12 months of filing.
This means that at least 80% of spouse, common-law, and dependant child sponsorship applicants who want to settle permanently this year could expect their applications to be handle in a year or less.
Minister Fraser’s report make no mention of parental and grandparent sponsorship applications. The most current processing periods for PGP applicants publishe on the IRCC website are 20-24 months, though this may be modifie later in 2022.
